Michael J. Akers is Director of Pharmaceutical R & D for Baxter BioPharma, LLC. Prior to joining Baxter he was a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry in the areas of sterile product science and technology. He earned a Ph.D. degree in Pharmaceutics from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and then was a research scientist for Searle Laboratories in Skokie, Illinois and Alcon Laboratories in Ft. Worth, Texas for five years before joining the faculty at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy. After four years at Tennessee, he joined Eli Lilly and Company where he worked for 17 years in scientific and management positions in pharmaceutical product development, quality control, and quality assurance. Dr. Akers has adjunct professor appointments at five schools of pharmacy and continues to write scholarly publications and teach short courses in the area of sterile product formulation, manufacturing, and quality. He is editor-in-chief of Pharmaceutical Development and Technology and serves on the editorial advisory boards of Pharmaceutical Technology, PDA Journal of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, and The AAPS Journal. Dr. Akers is active in the AAPS and PDA organizations where in the past he has served on their leadership boards as well as being a Fellow of AAPS.
